Introduction
Dear Students and Parents,
Welcome to my tutoring page. I’m glad you’re here. As both a student and teacher, I have learned an important lesson: One on one writing tutoring, when done correctly, can be transformative. In graduate school at Boston College, where I received my M.A. in English, I attended office hours with Carlo Rotella, a writer for New York Times Magazine, and he reviewed my essays line by line, pointing out potential areas of improvement. Suddenly, my fixation on the final result faded, which, in a competitive environment, is hard to accomplish, and I became obsessed with the process of improving. When I taught freshman writing at Boston College, I met with each student three times over the course of the semester to review different paper assignments. In the beginning, they were intimidated and uncomfortable, expecting their papers to be covered in critical comments and red ink. However, by the end of the semester, they realized that I was invested in their growth as individuals. Teaching, at its core, is about relationships, but the dynamic between teachers and students is sometimes challenging to get right. Ted Sizer, former headmaster of Phillips Academy and professor at Harvard School of Education, believed that in the best schools, the teachers are coaches and the students are workers. Sizer said, “Teachers are going to have to learn to spend their time coaching students to do things, rather than merely telling them things. That’s tough, but absolutely necessary.” As your teacher and coach, I will guide you through challenges, instilling confidence in your academic abilities.
